How to Sew On a PVC Patch
Sew-on backing forms the strongest bond of the four methods. A sew-on PVC patch includes a stitch channel or pre-punched holes around the border, so a needle passes through the edge without piercing the moulded relief. Tailors attach the patch by machine or by hand, and the finished bond survives industrial laundering. Workwear, cadet uniforms and club colours rely on sew-on backing for this reason.
- Position and tack. Place the patch on the garment and hold it with two or three tacking stitches, or fabric-safe tape, so it stays square while you work.
- Match the thread. Load a strong polyester thread in a colour matched to the patch border, using a medium needle for the fabric weight.
- Stitch the border. Sew around the edge through the stitch channel, keeping stitches close and even. A machine handles the run quickly; a hand needle works for small batches.
- Finish and knot. Secure the thread on the reverse with a firm knot and trim the tail. The patch is now permanent.

How to Attach a 3M Adhesive PVC Patch
3M adhesive backing bonds a PVC patch to a smooth, rigid surface. The peel-and-stick film on the reverse grips helmets, toolboxes, laptop shells and vehicle panels. Adhesive backing is designed for hard surfaces rather than fabric, because textile fibres reduce contact area and weaken the bond over time. On the right surface, the bond lasts; on cloth, it does not.
- Clean the surface. Wipe the hard surface with isopropyl alcohol and let it dry. Dust, grease and moisture stop the adhesive from keying to the surface.
- Peel the film. Remove the protective liner from the back of the patch and avoid touching the exposed adhesive.
- Position once. Place the patch accurately on the first attempt, because the adhesive sets on contact and does not reposition cleanly.
- Apply firm pressure. Press the whole face for about 30 seconds, then leave the bond to cure for 24 to 48 hours before heavy handling.

Plain backing ships with no attachment layer. Manufacturers and merch brands choose plain backing when a garment decorator heat-seals the patch with controlled commercial equipment, when the patch is moulded into another product, or when patches are supplied loose for collectors and trading. A plain-backed patch is not a domestic project — a professional press holds the temperature that a household iron cannot.
Order plain backing only when a decorator handles the application, or when the patch does not need attaching at all. For a garment you fit yourself, choose velcro or sew-on backing at the point of order. Backing is selected before production, and there is no minimum order on any backing type.

Why You Cannot Iron On a PVC Patch
PVC patches carry no iron-on backing. Polyvinyl chloride softens above 120°C, and a domestic iron reaches 180°C on a cotton setting. Heat at that level deforms the moulded relief, flattens the raised detail and ruins the design. The material that makes a PVC patch waterproof and colour-fast is the same material that fails under a hot iron.
Iron-on backing suits embroidered and woven patches, where a heat-activated film bonds thread to fabric without harming the patch. PVC works differently.
