A PVC patch glossary defines the materials, construction methods, backing types and ordering terms used in custom PVC patch production. Adhesive backing (3M)
Adhesive backing is a peel-and-stick 3M film bonded to the reverse of a patch. The film fixes the patch to hard, smooth surfaces such as helmets, laptop shells and toolboxes, rather than fabric. Airsoft patch
An airsoft patch is a morale or identification patch worn on plate carriers, rigs and loadouts during airsoft and milsim. Artwork

Backing
Backing is the attachment layer applied to the reverse of a patch after curing. The backing choice does not affect the moulded face, because it is added once the rubber has already set. BFPO delivery

Bleed
Bleed is the margin of artwork extended past the die line so no gap appears after cutting. Adequate bleed keeps colour running to the very edge of the finished patch. Our artwork requirements page specifies the bleed we need. See also: Die-cut, Vector file.

Chenille patch
A chenille patch is a raised, yarn-loop textured patch with a vintage varsity aesthetic. Chenille uses looped yarn where PVC uses moulded rubber, so the two differ in texture and durability. Colour matching
Colour matching reproduces a brand colour to a Pantone reference through the full depth of the PVC. Curing

Custom die-cut shape

Die-cut

Digital proof

Dual-layer patch (PVC and embroidery)

Durometer

Edge finish

Embroidered patch

Full-depth pigment
Full-depth pigment is colour mixed into the liquid PVC before moulding, so it runs through the whole patch. Colour therefore does not fade, peel or crack the way surface printing does. Glow-in-the-dark patch
A glow-in-the-dark patch contains phosphorescent pigment that charges under light and re-emits it in darkness. Hard PVC

Heat stabiliser

Hook-and-loop (velcro) backing
Hook-and-loop backing is a hook panel bonded to the reverse that fastens to a loop field on the garment. Infrared (IR) compatible

Iron-on (why PVC is not iron-on)
PVC patches are not supplied iron-on. Polyvinyl chloride softens above 120°C, and a domestic iron reaches 180°C on a cotton setting, which deforms the moulded relief. Merrow border

Metallic-effect patch

Minimum order

Morale patch

Mould

Mould engraving

Pantone (PMS)

Phthalates

Pigment

Pin-and-clip backing

Plain backing

Plasticiser

Polyvinyl chloride (PVC)

Printed patch

Proof approval

Reflective patch
A reflective patch combines moulded rubber with a retroreflective panel that returns light towards its source. The panel activates under torchlight and headlights rather than glowing on its own. Relief

Sew-on backing

Shore hardness

Silicone patch

Size

Frequently Asked Questions
Is a PVC patch the same as a rubber patch?
Yes. A PVC patch and a rubber patch are the same product — a badge moulded from plasticised polyvinyl chloride. Suppliers use both names, along with silicone-style patch and morale patch, for the same soft PVC item.
Are PVC patches and silicone patches the same thing?
No. PVC patches are moulded from polyvinyl chloride, and silicone patches are moulded from silicone rubber. The two materials look similar but differ in feel, cost and chemistry, as our PVC vs silicone comparison explains.
Do PVC patches have a minimum order?
